The Northwood College/John Lyon School partnership

In the Summer of 2006, Northwood College and The John Lyon School launched their Partnership Programme. Both schools believe firmly that girls and boys benefit from single-sex education, but they also believe that girls and boys benefit from opportunities to interact socially, culturally and intellectually.

The Partnership Programme includes joint activities such as the Year 12 Outward Bound Expedition to Scotland, musical activities, Debating Society, staff training, theatre trips, Gifted and Talented events, legal issues seminars, joint interview practice for university candidates, school visits, pastoral sessions, discos and a Sixth Form Leavers’ Ball.

A programme is also being developed so staff from the two schools can learn from each other’s expertise, involving professional development sessions and sharing good practice.

A wide range of future activities is planned, and the Programme is constantly reviewed.

Jacqualyn Pain, Head Mistress of Northwood College, said:
“Single-sex schools are absolutely right for the education of boys and girls in the classroom, but we also recognise that there is much to be gained by the pupils being involved in joint social, cultural and intellectual activities. This partnership will enable them to make friends and work together, so that they are prepared when they go to university and into the world of work.
Because we are very distinctive institutions, there is a great deal the schools can offer each other – and that applies to staff as well as students. It is always useful for a teacher to be able to have contact with another school: it stops you becoming insular.”

The John Lyon School’s Headmaster, Kevin Riley, added: Partnership launch quiz
“We are both successful single-sex schools and that is how we intend to remain. However, I also see great benefits in boys and girls, particularly in the older age groups, getting together for certain activities, both social and academic.”
