Juniors

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 (Bryden Brown House) - For girls aged 7 to 11 years

Bryden Brown House is a new purpose built building, opened in 1995. The Juniors have two-form entry with girls in classes of 20 - 22. The majority of girls move up from Vincent House but there is also a small intake of girls at 7+. Entry for these girls is by formal assessment and interview. As well as the classrooms the Junior School is equipped with an art studio, music room, science room, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) suite and a well-resourced library. The staff are well qualified to teach this age group and they have a wide range of subject specialisms.

The curriculum continues to be broad-based and challenging. It is designed to go beyond the requirements of Key stage 2 of the National Curriculum. The core subjects of English, Maths and Science are enhanced by studies in French, Spanish, German, Latin, Art, Design Technology, ICT, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Music, Drama and all branches of P.E. The work in the curriculum is extended through television programmes, specialist visitors to the school and by related visits to wild life parks, museums and houses of historic interest. To support studies in Science there is a wild flower garden and pond.

A carefully planned programme of pupil care has been developed that is delivered through weekly class lessons. An active House system encourages participation in academic and sporting activities and helps to promote good behaviour and a sense of collegiality across the age groups. Girls are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility by holding offices such as form captain. Residential trips are arranged to complement academic studies and also to develop independence. Charity events are regularly organized to encourage a sense of awareness of the needs of others.

Extra-curricular activities are a strong feature of the Junior School. Taking place both during the lunch hour and after school, they allow the girls to develop or to discover their talents. Clubs vary from year to year but always include chess, cards, ballet, speech and drama, judo, a variety of PE clubs and many more.
