Reception Multi-Lingual Story time Session
1st February 2012
The Reception class and their parents and grandparents were treated to a wonderful story time as part of their literacy curriculum. Mrs Gaynor and Mrs Hamilton invited parents, grandparents, teachers and the school's own Senior girls to read to the children in any language. We had so many volunteers for this new initiative! Some parents chose to bring their own story, teachers brought in their own story books and others chose from the EYC's own collection.
Miss Martin (pictured) selected a very familiar story – 'The Three Little Pigs' and read it in Catalan. Soon the girls were able to 'huff and puff' in Catalan! Miss Quirk and Miss Gladstone also joined in the fun. Miss Quirk read a delightful story in French and the children were soon joining in with the counting and the names of the characters. The children quickly picked up on the similarities with their own English language with certain words, saying the word in French and then translating it for themselves into English.
Karla Murray and her friends performed a neat double act with one student reading in the foreign language and the other translating 'Hansel and Gretel' into English. Mrs Misra's mother read a Hindi story which described the names of the animals and their colours. The girls and parents were interested to see the different script and letters and the parents were very surprised to learn just how many letters and vowels are in the Hindi language.
Reception parents, please make a note in your diary that on Friday 2nd March, from 8.30-9am, we shall be holding our Reception Numeracy Morning.
