The story of the past is both complex and illuminating. Students of History are encouraged to engage fully in the characters and events that have shaped the world we live in today. All pupils in years 7-9 study History and each year group has the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular trips and clubs. Previously pupils have visited Penshurst Place, Warwick castle and the World War One battlefields in Belgium and well as taken an active role in History Book and Film Clubs.


Curriculum summary

Year 7 – Introduction to History: Detective Skills & Invaders, Medieval Period -Ruling, Living and Working, Islamic Empires &Other Cultures

Year 8 – History skills, Tudors- Religion, Rulers & Ruled, Slavery – Rights and Freedoms

Year 9 - Empires to war- WW1 & its impact, Women in WW1-Life, Rights and Freedoms an investigation, 20thC Destruction and Chaos-World History & Totalitarian regimes: Nazi Germany & other dictators

GCSE Pupils look at C20th History in a variety of ways– Depth Study, International Relations, Source Analysis and an Investigation (Edexcel GCSE Modern World History A).

Unit 3 Britain 1931-51

Unit 4  CA-Russia


AS History  Pupils study in detail the USA & India. Units studied include:

Unit 1 Korea & Vietnam, American Civil Rights

Unit 2 India to Independence 1900-47

A2 History Pupils study in detail the Cold War and Chinese History over 100 years.

The History Department aims to help pupils:

DISCOVER - Develop an ethos of independent learning to equip pupils to deal with the academic challenges of history and beyond.

LEARN – Encourage and support pupils in developing the skills required to solve problems and succeed at history and beyond.

SUCCEED – Praise and reflect upon the criteria for and achievement of success in all possible areas of history and extra-curricular activities.

Through the study of History pupils will have the opportunity to develop their skills of analysis, critical thinking, explanation, evaluation, empathy, understanding and of course argument! In order to develop these skills pupils will use the latest ICT, books, DVDs, podcasts and many other fascinating resources and visual materials.
