Modern Languages
Bonjour!
Hola!
Guten Tag!
Welcome to the Modern Languages Department! We aim to foster enjoyment for language learning, develop creativity through languages and encourage initiative and independence. Every girl has the opportunity of studying two modern languages from Year 7 to A Level. We currently offer French, German and Spanish from Year 7 and will be offering Mandarin from next year. In Year 6 pupils study three languages for a term each and they choose from French, German, Mandarin and Spanish.
In Year 7, there is a choice of any two languages. Three lessons per week in each modern language in Years 7, 8, and 9. Four lessons per week in each modern language in Years 10 and 11. Conversation classes with native speakers take place in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13.
Each language room is equipped with audio-visual facilities and the Department is supported by whiteboard and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) technology. Our modern courses offer opportunities for practice in the four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils have attained Foundation GCSE level.
Extra-curricular activities in school include Mandarin and film clubs, competitions, plays and special language days.
Every year, girls have the opportunity to visit France, Spain and Germany and A Level students have the opportunity to undertake work experience abroad.
