Welcome to the Sixth Form

Being a Sixth Form student at Northwood College is an exciting and important time for you. It’s a very different stage in your educational career, as you begin the transformation from schoolgirl to Higher Education student. Why not have a look at our prospectus, or better still, come for a visit.

In the Sixth Form, you will have the opportunity to study subjects which you have chosen. Girls usually take four subjects at AS level in Year 12 and continue with three of those to A2 level in Year 13. This structure should allow you to retain some breadth in your choice of subjects.

Academically, you will find that working at Advanced Level will offer increasing rewards and stimulation. The more you are involved in your subjects, the more you will enjoy them and the harder you will want to work. You will be expected to take much more responsibility for organising your own work - for example, you will need to plan your own schedule so that you meet all deadlines; you will need to learn how to judge the depth of background reading necessary to complete a well informed and well argued essay and you will need to develop communication skills so that you can take a full part in class discussion.

Being in the Sixth Form is very different to the rest of the school. Your relationship with the staff will be very different. It should be a partnership in which you work to the best of your ability and the staff work with you to help you realise your potential. The partnership is also more wide-ranging than this. Sixth Form life is not just about academic study - we need your assistance in helping the staff to run the school and in the organisation of many activities. You have considerable opportunities to undertake positions of responsibility and your ideas and initiatives are always welcomed and appreciated.

By the end of Year 12, you will need to make important decisions about Higher Education and your future. Your Form Tutor, the Head of Sixth Form, and the Head of Careers will be able to help you to make the choice that is right for you.
