There are three well-equipped Chemistry laboratories and two dedicated
technicians.

Subject specialists teach Chemistry as a separate
science from Year 7.

The schemes of work in Years 7 to 9 have a large emphasis
on learning through practical work, the content is based upon the
National Curriculum but several GCSE topics are also introduced.

Students are given many opportunities to develop their ICT skills
and, when appropriate, lessons can take place in an ICT suite.

At GCSE, students currently follow the Edexcel specification.
The coursework component is 20% of the final marks. The main coursework
investigation is carried out at the start of Year 11.

Chemistry is an extremely popular A level subject and there are
large numbers of students taking this subject in Years 12 and 13.
We follow the OCR specification and students carry out a practical
examination. There are practical lessons every week to ensure that
the pupils are fully prepared for their final assessment.

The Chemistry department celebrates ‘Chemistry Week’ each
year and this year, students entered the photography competition
run by The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Chemistry Department organises a trip to the Royal Society
Summer Exhibition each year. This is a fantastic opportunity for
students to explore new developments and applications of cutting-edge
science.
