Senior School - History Department

Curriculum

  • Year 7 – Topics include the Battle of Hastings and the Black Death.

  • Year 8 – A variety of topics from Henry VIII and the chaos of the English Civil War, to the transformation of England’s ‘Green and Pleasant Land’ into ‘Dark Satanic Mills.”

  • Year 9 - what life was like during the two World Wars for the soldiers fighting and for those left at home.

GCSE

  • A Modern World History course is followed.

  • This covers: Life in Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia; How and why did women get the vote?; The Course of World War II and the impact on Britain.

Skills

We enable students:

  • To treat information critically, develop an understanding of different interpretations and how to identify them.

  • To extract, select and deploy relevant information.

  • These are important skills for life not just for History.

Visits

  • Visits currently include Warwick Castle, the National Army Museum and Duxford Imperial War Museum.

  • They develop greater depth of understanding and interest.

Extra Curricular

  • History club for Years 7-9 covers a wide range of topics and provides assistance with homework.

  • History film club for Upper School and Sixth Form develops content knowledge.

  • Resources

  • The Department has an abundance of resources including books, videos, DVDs, an interactive whiteboard, all of which are used to help foster an interest in History, and which are continually updated.
