Senior School - Science Department - Physics

  • There are three Physics teachers and one dedicated technician. There are 2 recently refurbished laboratories.

  • The development of pupil practical skills is at the heart of every lesson with data-logging probes such as the motion sensor and the magnetic field sensor regularly used.

  • Focusing on everyday applications of the principles of Physics stimulates interest. Experienced teachers ensure that Physics is accessible to everyone.

  • There is a record number of pupils studying Physics (Edexcel) at AS and A2. In year 12, pupils are prepared for either the Medical Physics topic or the Astrophysics topic, as well as the practical examination.

  • Physics specialists teach all pupils in years 7 to 11. AQA GCSE courses are followed.

  • In Years 7 to 9 the schemes of work are based upon, but go beyond, the National Curriculum.

  • The Physics Department organises many trips, including to the Royal Institution, Mill Hill observatory, National Space Centre, AS and A2 revision conference and to the “Superstrings” lecture.

  • As part of Einstein Year, the Year 12 group performed a whole school assembly on the life and work of Albert Einstein.

  • The Department has helped pupils organise summer school activities between Years 12 and 13. Examples include the “Headstart” engineering courses at university, as well as a two-week placement at Imperial College to assist a Ph.D. Engineering student.
